Revision Rhinoplasty

A Thoughtful Approach to Correcting Previous Surgery

Revision Rhinoplasty

If you have undergone rhinoplasty before and are unhappy with the outcome — whether that means ongoing cosmetic concerns, breathing difficulties, or both — you are not alone. Revision rhinoplasty (also called secondary or re-do rhinoplasty) is one of the most common reasons patients seek a specialist consultation.

Feeling dissatisfied following nose surgery can be emotionally difficult. At the Manchester Rhinoplasty Clinic, we approach every revision patient with empathy, honesty, and without judgement. Our goal is to understand exactly what is troubling you and to provide a realistic assessment of what can be improved.

Common Concerns We Address

Many patients come to us feeling disappointed or frustrated after a previous rhinoplasty that didn’t meet their expectations. You may be dealing with:

Why Is Revision Rhinoplasty More Complex?
Revision surgery presents unique challenges because the nasal anatomy has already been altered. Scar tissue, changed or weakened cartilage, and altered structural relationships all require careful evaluation and a more advanced surgical approach. In some cases, grafting with your own rib cartilage or ear cartilage may be required to rebuild the nasal framework. Mr Ranganathan has specific expertise in revision rhinoplasty and will carry out a thorough structural and aesthetic assessment before any surgical plan is proposed. Nothing is rushed, and honesty about what can realistically be achieved is central to every revision consultation.

Common Reasons for Seeking Revision Rhinoplasty

  • Residual or worsening cosmetic concerns after previous surgery
  • Asymmetry or an unnatural-looking result
  • Breathing difficulties that have not improved or have worsened
  • Collapse or structural weakness in the nasal framework
  • Unsatisfactory tip shape, bridge height, or nostril appearance
  • General dissatisfaction with outcome of surgery elsewhere
Mr Ranganathan will recommend the most appropriate technique for your individual anatomy and goals at consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is generally recommended to wait a minimum of 12 months after your primary rhinoplasty before considering revision surgery. This allows all swelling to fully resolve and the nasal tissues to mature. In some cases, changes that appear concerning at 3–6 months improve significantly with time. Mr Ranganathan will advise you on the right timing for your specific situation.

Previous surgery alters the nasal anatomy — scar tissue develops, cartilage may be weakened or missing, and the structural relationships change. This makes assessment, planning, and the surgery itself more technically demanding. Mr Ranganathan has specialist expertise in revision cases and will carry out a thorough evaluation before proposing any surgical plan.

Yes. Mr Ranganathan regularly sees patients who have had rhinoplasty performed in other countries or clinics. He will assess your current anatomy, listen to your specific concerns, and provide an honest opinion on what can be improved and how. Every revision case is evaluated entirely on its own merits.

Revision surgery can address a wide range of concerns including residual cosmetic asymmetry, an unnatural or ‘operated’ appearance, breathing difficulties that were not resolved, structural collapse or weakness, and tip irregularities. However, the achievable improvements depend on your individual anatomy, skin type, and the nature of the original surgery. Realistic expectations will be discussed openly at consultation.

If the original surgery was performed via an open approach, the existing columellar scar will be reused — no new external incisions are required. The surgical access and any additional incisions will be planned to minimise visible scarring, and discussed with you in detail beforehand.

Multiple previous surgeries increase the complexity — but do not automatically rule out further correction. Mr Ranganathan will assess your case thoroughly and provide an honest, realistic opinion on what is achievable. If he does not feel surgery would benefit you, he will tell you clearly and explain why.
